Synopsys Design Constraints (SDC)
About SDC
Synopsys' widely used design constraints format, known as SDC, describes the "design intent" and surrounding constraints
for synthesis, clocking, timing, power, test and environmental and operating conditions. A
complete list of the constraints available in SDC is available through request of a
license. SDC has been in use and evolving over 10 years, making it the most popular and
proven format for describing design constraints. Essentially all synthesized designs use
SDC and several EDA companies have translators that can read and process SDC. Access by
EDA tools to SDC is especially important now for improved logical-to-physical
interoperability.
Open Source SDC Parser
SDC licensees are encouraged to download and incorporate into their products the TCL-based SDC open source parser. The SDC parser enables EDA developers to save time, expense and risk associated with developing independent, non-standard tool interfaces. The parser enables all EDA tools to follow the standard, ensuring continual compliance with the SDC open source format while greatly improving interoperability for EDA customers. The SDC parser is free-of-charge and available for download on the TAP-in Web site.
SDC License Information
An SDC license provides the user the right to use the SDC
format to describe design intent and constraints. For an EDA vendor, an SDC license allows
the vendor to develop tools to read in and write out data coded in the SDC format. For an
ASIC or Library vendor, it allows them to distribute design data coded in SDC to their
customers and all the EDA vendors who have licensed SDC from Synopsys. It also allows them
to write internal applications to read and write data coded in SDC. In a university, an
SDC license allows the user to develop applications to read in and write out data coded in
SDC. In addition, SDC licenses include documentation and support.
Interoperability Developers' Forum
All licensees of
SDC automatically become part of the Developers' Forum. The Developers' Forum is designed
to provide licensees with information and support to incorporate SDC into their tools and
design flows. The forum is geared towards technical developers of EDA tools. During the
Developers' Forum, which is usually held biannually, licensees learn about the future
plans for the SDC format, obtain updated documentation, become familiar with support
channels, find out about scheduled training and other events, plus share experiences with
each other. See the events section for more information on the next Interoperability Developers' Forum.
How To Become an SDC Licensee
The open source license for Synopsys Design Contraints is free and available now through the TAP-in program. Current TAP-in licensees can upgrade to open source at their convenience.
